Set at the mouth of the Berg River, Velddrif has long been a popular holiday destination. Offering typical Cape West Coast hospitality and charm, with creaking fishing boats, cool sea breezes and a smorgasbord of seafood and regional specialties to dine on.
It’s an important birding area with nearly 350 species! At times more than 30 000 Cape Cormorants can be seen going to the salt pans to roost.
Big into birds? See everything from the huge flocks of Flamingos feeding in the river estuary to the pelicans sunning themselves on islands. Drive along the famous Bokkomlaan, and see how the fish are literally hung out to dry! For the uninitiated, bokkoms have an intense taste, but anyone who has lived in Velddrif define them as culturally imperative!
A half-hour’s drive takes you to Aurora, a tranquil and very safe village in the Sandveld. Friendly people will welcome you, give you information and direct you to whatever it is you are looking for. Stargazing here takes on a new meaning, with no nearby lights to diffuse the brightness and contrast of the night sky.
