There are bistros and eateries peppered along the oak-lined main road and creativity is evident just about everywhere.

It is a place that has drawn artists and poets over the decades, who fell in love with the charm of this inspirational village with its Faerie Sanctuary – it is said that if you keep a keen lookout, you will spot one of these magical creatures among the tangled garden and indigenous trees!

Bordering the Breede River is Bontebok National Park, home to the threatened Bontebok (a patterned buck) and renosterveld - a vegetation type of the fynbos (Cape Flora) biome characterised by small, tough, grey leaves, and predominance of the Daisy family.

East of Swellendam on the Tradouw River is the picturesque old village and mission station of Suurbraak with its oak-lined street and charming cottages. Traditional farming methods such as horse-ploughing and hand-sowing are still in use.
