Once considered impenetrable, there are now three major gateways to this scenically splendid village with the Swartberg Mountains as a backdrop: Swartberg Pass, Meiringspoort and Seweweekspoort that links the Cape Karoo with the Klein Karoo and the coast.

The region is unique and therefore lends itself to unique experiences, from hiking in the Swartberg, fossilised reptile footprint tours, 4x4s, cheese-making and dairy tours, star-gazing, botanical tours, wine tasting, olive tasting, Art at Sunset, the Karoo Labyrinth, to ghost walks!

Meiringspoort and the 27km Swartberg Pass are on Prince Albert’s doorstep and fall within the Swartberg Nature Reserve. The construction of both these passes is considered a major engineering achievement. The Swartberg Pass is something you need to see at least once in your life. It’s considered one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the world and was declared a national monument in 1988 and a World Heritage Site.

While the village and its people embrace modern technology, it manages to retain its much loved customs. Where else can you stroll down to the dairy to buy fresh milk, cream and yoghurt; have your pick of the freshest, home-grown sun-ripened fruit, olives and cheeses and freshly-baked bread at the market and stock up on local Karoo lamb?

Prince Albert is not only a preferred destination, but also the ideal stop-over for travelers from Cape Town, Gauteng and Port Elizabeth.
