A 140km drive north from Cape Town lands you in Porterville, a picturesque town on the slopes of the beautiful Olifants River Mountains.
Famous as the home of the rare Disa Uniflora, Porterville is the only place in South Africa where these extraordinary flowers bloom, the rarest being the sulphur yellow Disa.
At the foot of the Olifants River Mountains, on the outskirts of the town, visitors can explore 22 waterfalls, hiking trails, mountain bike routes, horse rides, picnic and camping facilities, barbeque facilities and beautiful natural swimming pools.
Climatic conditions vary from dry, hot summers with powerful cross winds, making it the ideal and a popular location for paragliding enthusiasts, to severe winters, with snow on the mountain peaks and storms rolling in from the Atlantic coast in the west.
The local Cellars produce good wines and in the summer months can offer you enticing tasting experiences of both wild figs and pomegranates. Horse riding, bird watching, flower viewing and fishing are also popular. The area is home to large flocks of the beautiful Blue Crane bird – more than fifty percent of these magnificent birds can be found in the Western Cape.
