Klaarstroom, meaning “clear stream”, gave farmers from deep in the Great Karoo a place to wash their precious cargo of wool when en route to the small port of Mossel Bay. It was the home of South Africa’s last transport rider and on a farm in the district, visitors can still see a licensed witblitz* still, which has been declared a National Monument. With its delightful, well-preserved Victorian architecture, Klaarstroom remains an historical snap-shot of a Southern African Victorian village.
Witblitz is distilled hard liquor which some revere for its medicinal qualities and others say is almost always guaranteed to affect your eyesight.
