Founded in the 18th century, it is the oldest Protestant mission station in the country. All the buildings surrounding the church square are national monuments. It is interesting to note that on 1st February 1995, President Nelson Mandela announced that his official residence in Cape Town, formerly known as Westbrooke, had been renamed Genadendal, symbolizing that God’s grace was also resting on the State President, as it was in the case of the oldest mission station in Southern Africa.
