Leaving the fantastic view of False Bay and the Cape Peninsula behind, you are met with the magical site of huge stretches of forest and seemingly endless mountain peaks.
Each of Elgin's entrances from the national road is graced by a well-stocked farm stall. The Orchard at the western entrance offers picnic lunches, a winery, art gallery and a fully licensed restaurant. At the eastern entrance you will find The Peregrine Farm Stall that is famous for its biltong and restaurant, wine cellar, and manufacturing jeweller.
Other popular farm stalls in the valley are Thandi where traditional fare and good wine can be enjoyed before browsing for some hand-crafted local goods, and Houw Hoek where you can hire a fishing rod and relax with a picnic next to well stocked trout dams surrounded by mountain views. Catch something and they'll cook it for you!
Hiking and mountain bike trails through fynbos and pine forests with awesome scenic drives are among the rich and varied experiences the Valley has to offer. Approaching the town from the Villiersdorp side you drive through Viljoens Pass which follows the gorge of the Palmiet River and offers superb views of the Riviersonderend valley.
