Considered by many to be the jewel of the Cape Overberg, this once sleepy little town favoured by local holiday-makers has become a heavy-hitter in the region with an enviable wine route, adventure sports and THE WHALES making it a sought after destination to visit. Here are five things you HAVE to do when next in Hermanus.

What to expect: You simply cannot visit Hermanus and not embark on some whale watching. Considered the heart of the whale route, Hermanus is perfect for land-based whale watching and sea-faring tours. To fully immerse yourself in the whale experience, visit Hermanus during the first week of October when the seaside town hosts an annual whale festival—a celebration of all things cetacean.

What to expect: Rated as one of the top quad trails in the country, the route takes you through the world-renowned vineyards of Hamilton Russell and Southern Right wineries, up the mountain – passing through beautiful fynbos – with your halfway point one of the most epic views in the Western Cape.

What to expect: Hop-on Hop-off safari-style and discover the boutique wineries of the beautiful Hemel & Aarde Valley in a truly unforgettable way. This often underrated route is home to the likes of Bouchard Finlayson, Sumaridge, Creation, Newton Johnson, and Hamilton Russell, all of which offer something totally unique and inspiring.

What to expect: Covering 18 sq kilometres in the Kleinrivier Mountains, the Fernklook Nature Reserve is a nature lover’s paradise. While it comprises just 0.002% of the Cape Floral Kingdom, it is home to 18% of its plants. Making it the only place on earth where so many species of plant can be found growing together in such close proximity. The reserve is also home to a variety of small animals, including buck, baboons, mongoose, and the occasional mountain leopard. There is also a 60km network of trails for all levels of fitness to enjoy.

What to expect: Arguably the most popular path in Hermanus, running from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach, a 12km stretch of pristine coastal beauty. The views of Walker Bay and the Overberg Mountains are quite incredible, while the cliff walk is perfect for land-based whale watching during season. There are a number of benches dotted along the way, perfect for picnics or to simply sit back, relax and soak in the views. Magic.
