Kitesurfing is a unique combination of paragliding, wake boarding, wind surfing, surfing and gymnastics, which makes for a thrilling and enjoyable sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard, which resembles a wakeboard but without the straps. Kitesurfers can jump up to twenty metres high!
The Western Cape boasts a wide selection of kitesurfing spots and a variety of conditions for kitesurfers, from shallow waters, smaller waves, and big waves to warm and cold waters. The strong wind conditions attract many of the world’s best kite surfers from October to April.
Due to these ideal conditions many of the world’s best kitesurfers spend 3-4 months over summer training in the waters of the Western Cape.
Learning to kitesurf in the Western Cape is easy. It doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned pro or simply someone who is enthusiastic, adventurous and eager to learn. Cape Town is known as the “Mecca” to kitesurfers. It is most definitely the best place to learn how to master the sport and discover what the craze is all about.
There are many kite schools, kiteboarding centres, beginner’s courses and IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) certified teachers to choose from. It usually takes 2-3 days (12 hours) to be able to kite independently and all equipment is included in the lessons.
