Products will be showcased under the South African National Pavilion which has been organised and funded by the South African Department of Trade and Industry (the dti).
SIAL China is the largest show in Asia and the 4th biggest food show in the world, with major market stakeholders from retail, hotel, restaurant, catering, food services, import/export trade and manufacturing sectors attending the show.
"the dti's mandate is to facilitate the exports of South African goods and services globally through financial and non-financial support mechanisms. In executing this mandate, we work closely with Provincial agencies such as WESGRO. We are pleased with the partnership that we have forged will all Provinces and are pleased to be facilitating access to markets for WESGRO members towards increased export growth for the country. We look forward to returns on the investment made in the form of greater sales to China by South Africa", stated Lerato Mataboge, Deputy Director-General for Trade and Investment South Africa at the dti.
"China continues to remain a core market for our exporters," commented Harris. "The recent reduction of import tariffs and the efforts by the Chinese government to further liberalise the market, offer our companies great opportunities in the Chinese market."
Acknowledging the dedication required to enter a market of China's magnitude, Harris added: "Although China remains a challenging market for our exporters because of its size, the promotional efforts undertaken by Wesgro's Trade Unit - together with key stakeholders such as Wines of South Africa (WOSA), are starting to increase greater awareness and interest for Western Cape offerings, especially wine and tourism. In fact, from 2014 to 2017, overall exports to China grew by 109%."
Western Cape companies that will be participating include Bayede Marketing (Pty) Ltd, African Premium Brands, Berfin (Pty) Ltd, Cape Cookies CC, African Brand Link (Pty) Ltd, South African Fruit and Vegetables Canners Export Council, Tamasa Trading Wines (Pty) Ltd, Doolhof Wine Estate (Pty) Ltd, Robinson & Sinclair CC, De Goede Sukses Wines (Pty) Ltd, Haskell Vineyards (Pty) Ltd, Vansha Farming (Pty) Ltd, The Avondale Trust, Thandi Wines (Pty) Ltd, Trajan Wines (Pty) Ltd, Graceland Vineyards (Pty) Ltd, De Goree Farming (Pty) Ltd and Croft Sales & Rentals CC.
Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, commented: "Agri-processing is one of our priority focus areas for job creation under Project Khulisa and this opportunity to showcase their products to the Chinese market is an important step in helping to grow their businesses. China is the biggest food and beverage consumer market in the world, and already we've seen tremendous growth in wine sales here. This year is set to be an excellent year for wine quality and there has never been a more opportune time for us to showcase these wines to the world."
Ms Mataboge, noted: "Wines, FMCG, beverages, teas and confectionary are among the range of products being promoted SIAL China. We welcome our international business partners and friends to come and visit the South African Pavilion and companies in Hall E3 at SIAL China."
