Leaving from the Outeniqua Transport Museum, the upward journey one passes through six little tunnels, and at times the pass is so narrow that you could almost reach out and touch the mountain (please don’t!) The railway passes through areas of forest and fynbos, including an abundance of king proteas, and culminates with spectacular views at the summit of the mountain.
The return leg brings you back through the six tunnels, with the cars travelling in reverse order, offering passengers an alternate view of the pass. About halfway down the pass, passengers stop at a picnic site, to enjoy packed lunches and take in the incredible surrounds. You will struggle to find a more epic place to tuck into picnic.
The journey ends where it began at the Outeniqua Transport Museum.
Outeniqua Transport Museum
Like the Power Van, the museum offers visitors a glimpse into a bygone era with a variety of steam locomotives on display. In total, there are 13 locomotives in the museum, including the Emil Kessler - Johannesburg’s first steam locomotive - the impressive GL Garrett, a coach from the Royal Train of 1947 and Paul Kruger’s coach and private saloons.
There are also various models of steam locomotives, a brilliant collection of steam locomotive number plates, makers plates, a model train room, road motor vehicles and a private vintage car selection on display.
The museum can be booked for weddings, product launches and other functions.
