The Saai Agricultural day had its origin in 2022 after a devastating drought, which had raged for more than five years, was broken with generous rain.Saai was one of several institutions that supported farmers with drought aid and decided to continue with their support to farmers. Saai strives to strongly support the family farmer concept.
Last year the day was presented with great success on a farm, but due to the great interest and attendance it was decided to present the day over two days this year, as well as move the day to a town site where the necessary infrastructure exists. The day is managed by Koupprodusente Kooperasie while the local municipality is involved in providing infrastructure. Surrounding neighbouring towns are also invited to the day.
Various activities are offered over the two days. New knowledge is essential for farming, so several experts are taking part such as the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Theo de Jager, Gerrie Nel and Heinrich Wyngaardt. Famous artists and personalities who will also perform are Pieter Smit, Tino, Willem Botha, Birre Burger, Le Roux Burger and Kobus Wiese.
Fifty exhibitors will exhibit their products as well as various farming-related demonstrations and explanations.Laingsburg area is known for livestock farming and seed production and demonstrations will also showcase these two industries in particular. Competitions synonymous with agriculture days are the order of the day and include potjiekos competition, Miss Agriculture, strongman competition and sports activities.
Information sessions for small farmers are also offered and the youth will be introduced to various university and college programs for further studies.Socializing and entertainment form part of the festivities and for this a traditional farmer's bazaar is offered, local entrepreneurs market their products, various food stalls fill the bellies while “Boeremusiek” that makes the toes curl, will also be on the program.
On a hot day, the beer garden will provide the necessary comfort. Said activities are part of an incredible SAAI Agriculture Day that will be presented on 25 and 26 October 2024. Come enjoy the Karoo hospitality with us.
