This is the coolest wine growing area along the south coast and conveniently close to Cape Town. There are many farmstalls just off the N2, offering great pit-stops along the way and the area is surrounded by inspiring mountain passes. Along the Elgin Valley Wine Route, you’ll find many award-wining Sauvignon Blancs, with the distinctive minerality, crisp acidity, freshness, and after some maturation, fruitiness typical of cool-climate whites. Elgin’s earthy, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Syrah wines, with excellent ageing potential, are also grabbing awards and wine lovers' attention. Additionally, Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and small experimental quantities of Grenache Noir are grown here. A journey down this wine route is the perfect day out.
