The Cape's manufacturing sector makes up 15% of our economy and is a key job creator for the province and the city of Cape Town.

Food, beverages and tobacco make up 28% of manufacturing output while petroleum products, chemicals, rubber and plastic constitute 21% and metals, metal products, machinery and equipment 14.2%.

In recent years exports from cape manufacturers have performed strongly, almost doubling since 2009, with the rest of Africa buying 45%, Europe 25% and Asia 13% of our manufactured exports.

In turn inward foreign direct investment in the manufacturing space now makes up 20% of our total foreign direct investment ¬– five times more than just five years ago. Big name brands like Kimberly-Clark, Jinko Solar (South Africa’s largest Solar PV manufacturer), LA Investment Holdings and Hisense have all set up shop here in recent years.

Wesgro is proud to sponsor the Manufacturing Indaba and conferences like it as they create a platform to raise this performance even further.

As Cape Town and the Western Cape’s official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency, Wesgro has worked with the city, the province and the Department of Trade & Industry to attract over R8 billion in investment, train 2 433 companies on export development, and facilitate the creation of over 5 000 direct jobs over the past five years.

Over the next five years we plan to attract billions more in investment, facilitate growth in a number of strategic sectors and support thousands of qualified exporters.
