The Onyx stone is thought to absorb and transform negative energy, help prevent the draining of personal energy and aid in the development of emotional and physical strength and stamina. Now, I am not sure if any of that is true, but I can testify to the fact that the latest Newmark Hotel, The Onyx, which opened its doors in December last year can claim to have the effects of the stone it is named after.

The CBD-based hotel cuts a dashing figure, with its bold black and white exterior and sleek interior finishes exuding a sophisticated charm, as it sits alongside the imposing skyscrapers, and looks down on the buzzing city streets. There is a real energy to the location, with The Onyx offering a luxurious slice of city living with all the amenities – restaurant, bar, pool, gym, spa and secure parking - and none of the drawbacks – traffic? What traffic? Noise? Not a peep once you’re inside.

The location is definitely a huge drawcard. The Cape Town Convention Centre (CTICC) is within walking distance, there are a number of world class restaurants and bars close by, while the V&A Waterfront is a five-minute shuttle drive away. But while The Onyx’s address is certainly a major plus, it is not the only perk on offer.

Boasting 14 Studio and 32 Deluxe Studio apartments, 28 One-Bedroom apartments, 17 Deluxe One-Bedroom Apartments and 11 Two-Bedroom Apartments, many of which have spectacular views of Cape Town and Table Mountain, each has its own private kitchenette, equipped with modern appliances, meaning you can choose between the hotel’s on-site restaurant, MRKT, or stay in.

Based on the ground floor of the hotel, MRKT has placed great emphasis on locally-source products, with a variety of fresh produce, artisanal foods and beverages on offer. It’s uncomplicated, authentic, delicious, and open for breakfast and lunch daily – to guests and the public - with its harvest buffet almost certain to become a fixture in the Mother City. The 110-seater is also home to a barista station and an open-plan bakery that produces handcrafted breads and pastries, perfect to kick-start your day.

A fantastic blend of hotel and residential accommodation, the Onyx is a welcome addition to city-living, and in a time where we are all looking to base ourselves closer to the action, and away from the chaos of long commutes, this slick, multi-faceted hotel could not have opened its doors at a better time.
