Purpose of the vacancy:

The purpose of this job is to profile and improve the visibility of the Western Cape as a competitive business events destination by increasing the number of business events attracted to the destination. The role ensures implementation of marketing communication and sales projects, business events bid proposals and activities to market Cape Town and the Western Cape as a premier business events destination.

The post is responsible for supporting the Convention Bureau Head to deliver the business events marketing mandate for the province. The role ensures delivery of the annual business conversion programme as per operational plan, generating sales leads with a specific focus on meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions from South Africa, Regional and African and to implement an effective bidding process and marketing activities to target key sectors. In addition, the incumbent will source business events marketing intelligence and identify strategic opportunities to that will build marketing the destination.


An appropriate diploma/degree in marketing, sales, event management or similar. At least four years’ experience within the business events industry, preferably in a sales capacity with a focus on domestic, regional, and sales on the African continent. Two years’ experience at a middle management level is essential. Sound knowledge of the services of a Convention Bureau environment with a focus on the industry locally and internationally would be an advantage. Marketing campaign experience is essential. Networking and stakeholder engagement experience. Valid Code B driver’s license. Willing to travel and work irregular hours. Computer literacy.

Operations: The candidate will take responsibility for implementing the bureau’s business events strategy and operational plan to attract, convert and support business events and activities for the destination. Drive and develop sales leads for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition from key sectors and markets. Project managing an effective bidding process, including planning, site inspections, on-site solutions, and post-event support. Effective use of the databases to gain leads and manage the bureau’s activity on these and relevant associations. Attendance and coordinating participation in trade engagements and road shows. Stakeholder Management: Development of strategic partnerships and joint ventures with stakeholders, both domestic and internationally, that strengthen visibility and positioning of the destination. Contribute to and support the activities of all strategic business units of Wesgro. Financial Management: Spend allocated budget in line with operational requirements and required business processes. Focus on quality return on investment for stakeholders by ensuring optimal budget spend and best value for money purchases. Compliance and Risk: Compliance with relevant risk processes and procedures in all aspects of department functioning in line with existing policies and procedure. Compliance with Wesgro’s and bureau’s data management systems. Reporting and Communication: Effectively producing quality reports of performance in line with business requirements as per requirements by Wesgro. Effectively position Wesgro in all internal and external communication, ensuring Wesgro is being respected as an agency of excellence in all spheres of business
