Country Brief United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the most dynamic and diversified economies in the Middle East. The country has experienced strong economic growth during the past decade largely underpinned by its vast hydrocarbon resources sector. Successful efforts have been made to diversify away from dependence on oil and gas exports and a solid industrial base has been created together with a very strong services sector. The establishment of free zones has been an important feature of this dive policy and the reform of property laws has provided a major boost to the real estate and tourism sectors. The diversification attempts are most clearly seen in the reinvention of the emirate of Dubai into a world class hub for tourism, real estate and trade.
The pace and scale of construction activities in the UAE has been phenomenal in recent years with developments in residential and commercial properties as well as tourist resorts and industrial facilities. Massive infrastructure developments in roads, rail, ports, airports and telecommunications have also been made.
While the effects of the global economic meltdown multiplied by Dubai’s debt burden have caused a slowdown in economic growth in the country as in other in 2009, the economy is projected to rebound in 2010. The country has the one of the highest GDP per capita in the Middle East and has a growing population that provides a ready market with high spending power. With reliable and extensive infrastructure in place, it is can serve as a suitable base from which to access the wider Middle Eastern
region.
Trade and investment relations between the UAE and South Africa have been growing over time, but, there still lies much scope for further developments. Imports exceeded exports to the country for the first time in 2008. Furthermore, a number of South African companies have established a presence in the UAE in various industries. UAE companies have also made several investments in estate and telecommunications sectors.
